TTEOK-GALBI?

TTEOK-GALBI(떡갈비) IS GRILLED SHORT RIB PATTIES WHICH IS A KOREAN ROYAL COURT CUISINE MADE WITH MINCED BEEF SHORT RIBS ORIGINALLY.

 Tteok-galbi, literally translated to “Cake ribs” as Tteok(떡) means “Rice cake” and Galbi(갈비) means “Rib”. The name comes from the food’s similarity in appearance to Tteok.

 Tteok-galbi was created by court ladies in the late Joseon Dynasty* era and the reason was that some Kings were not able to gnaw on another beef dish “Galbi”.

 In modern South Korea, Tteok-galbi is made with ingredients mixed with or other than beef and the most popular recipe is half beef and half pork.

 * Joseon Dynasty, officially the Great Joseon was the last dynastic kingdom of Korea, lasting just over 500 years. It was founded by Lee Seong-gye in July 1392 and replaced by the Korean Empire in October 1897. Hangul, the Korean alphabet was created by Sejong who is the 4th King of the Great Joseon. During the rule of Sejong, Korea saw advances in natural science, agriculture, literature, traditional Chinese medicine, and engineering. Because of such success, Sejong was given the title “Sejong the Great”.
